REPORT ON 1/16/05 2ND MEDLS Event at Lafayette Grill, NYC
What a wonderful evening, all ran smoothly, thanks to each managing member of our staff: Belin and her husband on sound and announcing, Angelina at Stage Managing, Dilara and Sharon at Vending for Amara, Susan Greico of Scattered pictures for Photography and Murat Aycin for Videography, and Amal who handled the door and registration and the cooperation of each dancer who read the Guidelines. arriving on time, followed directions and were ready to dance at their assigned times.
We had the pleasure of new vendors at this event including Amara's Emporium, Audrena International, Ya Gamal Costumes, and Rev. Elizabeth for Tarot Card Readings. Dino provided special enhanced dinners at a discount and a free drink for each dancer. Our wonderful band consisted of the Scott Wilson ensemble: Scott Wilson and Leni Wilson, Carmine, Umut, and George Stathos. The audience was up and dancing all through our 4 intermissions. We had door prizes galore and everyone stayed on and on to watch the wonderful, innovative, imaginative performances of all the performers. We also had some press coverage from Andrea Muraskin of Heeb Magazine.
We want you to appreciate the goals for MEDLS. Dancers need AND want to perform to perfect their art and enjoy their dance experience in an artistic fashion. Dancers need to see other dancers to learn more about other dance styles, be supportive and generally grown as a dancer. In my heyday, we had many nightclubs in NY with 2 to 4 dancers 7 nights a week to watch before or after our shows. Today, you can only see one dancer at a restaurant and it is expensive to do that.
So this is a great opportunity to see a lot of dancers for little investment. We need to support each other more and be an audience for each other in addition to our guests, family and friends. If each dancer prepares smartly, these events are perfect for showcasing your talents, acquiring promotion video and photography to expand your marketing efforts also.
Dancers and our audience loved having vending with low ticket items to buy so plan on finding those little accessories and gift items along with maybe a great deal on an inexpensive costume. It is not our intention to feature expensive costumes but rather a more reasonable and affordable vending experience for all. A chance to meet new vendors for follow-up-up shopping as well. All card holding MEDLS members may ask for Vendor Participating Discounts.
We hope to have our next event in April, I am off to training out of town for 4 weeks for a new job. This event will be geared towards performances with live music. So keep tuned.
We would love to hear your comments, wish list and ideas for growing MEDLS. We want to expand our venues to include artists specializing in MIDDLE EASTERN DANCE ART for example. We want to grow slowly and methodically as our dance industry and needs dictate. We have many wonderful ideas for the future.
Thank you, Amara Al Amir Managing Director amara@iworldartists.com
