Soraya El-Khouby, 30, who goes by the stage name Soraya, has been belly dancing since she was 3. Her family is of Middle Eastern descent - hailing from Syria - and dancing is something she grew up doing at family gatherings. She said the dance flows through her veins - literally, because it is part of her heritage. El-Khouby is also a cultural anthropologist, a dance instructor, a makeup artist and a vocalist who sings in both English and Arabic.

Johanna raised Aziza as a single parent. Aziza's father, recording artist/actor/singer Samir Al-Tawil had left before the child was even born, but Aziza and Johanna had strong ties in the Arabic Community of Brooklyn and the "Greektown" scene in Manhattan and they were certainly not alone. It was in this loving atmosphere that Aziza rose above the sad situation of her entry into this world and learned to shine through dance. While pregnant Johanna had played the darbucky for a party at her friend Serena's studio and had attended a Flamenco concert. Aziza had kicked Johanna so hard in the womb at the concert, Johanna had to leave-the pain was so great. She says she knew her daughter would be a dancer, too. Her kicks, Johanna says, were in "perfect" rhythm. READ ARTICLE

With a passion for performing, her goal is to paint a picture for the audience as if her body was formed from the music. Today, she is an innovator in costume design, and has hand-crafted and pieced her dance wear together to reflect her style. Her dance style is a derivative of contemporary Tribal, Hiphop, Urban sass, and Gothic ideas.

ZA-BETH IS GRAND DAME / DIVA OF THE YEAR                                         MEDLS

Purely by accident I became a real 60's go-go girl; boots, fringe, and booking agents.  My first go-go club was the New Yorker in downtown Boston.  The shows were full of singers, dancers of all types, and comedians.  Because of the new era of go-go, I had to learn fast if I expected to be in the shows. It was during this time frame I saw my first bellydancer and knew it was another form of dance to learn.  My first bellydance lesson was with one of the strippers.  Back then to earn a living you had to dance almost any style.  You never knew where an agent was going to book you and what type of dancer was needed, so you had to know them all.  You could make a living at traveling as a show girl.  It was show biz and we were show girls.  You could work six nights a week and actually make a living from it.  Eye lashes were on and off every day.  READ ARTICLE
